Fred Hampton (30 août 1948 à Monroe - 4 décembre 1969 à Chicago) est un militant politique afro-américain, membre du Black Panther Party.

En prison, il rencontre Jose « Cha Cha » Jimenez, membre d'un gang chicano de Chicago qu'il transforme à sa libération, en 1969, en groupe des Young Lords. Hampton deviendra l'un des initiateurs de la Rainbow Coalition avec les Young Lords et d'autres collectifs.

Leader du Black Panther Party dans l'Illinois, il travaille à une alliance avec le gang Blackstone Rangers. Dans le cadre de COINTELPRO, le dirigeant du FBI J. Edgar Hoover autorisa des opérations de déstabilisation de cette coordination.

Pour l'historien congolais Didier Moe Loembe, Fred Hampton fut le plus charismatique et aussi l'un des plus grands orateurs de tous les membres du Black Panther Party car pour ce militant noir des droits de l'homme, galvaniser les foules avec ses discours était comme un jeu.

Fred Hampton fut assassiné dans son appartement, pendant son sommeil, lors d'un assaut mené par le FBI et des policiers du Chicago Police Department dans le cadre de l'opération COINTELPRO. L'assaut avait été préparé par l'agent infiltré William O'Neal, qui avait réussi à devenir garde du corps d'Hampton. Mark Clark, qui dirigeait la section de Peoria (Illinois) du BPP, fut également tué lors de l'assaut, et plusieurs autres membres blessés. Les survivants, dont la fiancée d'Hampton enceinte de huit mois, Deborah Johnson, ainsi que Brenda Harris, Louis Truelock et Harold Bell, furent tous inculpés de « tentative de meurtre » sur les policiers bien qu'aucune balle n'ait été tirée et la caution demandée fixée à 100 000 dollars. Quatre jours après l'assaut, Geronimo Pratt fut la cible d'un raid analogue à Los Angeles.

In prison, he met Jose "Cha Cha" Jimenez, a member of a Chicago Chicano gang that he transformed upon his release in 1969 into the Young Lords group. Hampton would become one of the initiators of the Rainbow Coalition along with the Young Lords and other collectives.

Leader of the Black Panther Party in Illinois, he is working on an alliance with the Blackstone Rangers gang. As part of COINTELPRO, FBI leader J. Edgar Hoover authorized operations to destabilize this coordination.

For the Congolese historian Didier Moe Loembe, Fred Hampton was the most charismatic and also one of the greatest orators of all the members of the Black Panther Party because for this black human rights activist, galvanizing the crowds with his speeches was like a game.

Fred Hampton was murdered in his apartment, while he slept, during an assault led by the FBI and officers from the Chicago Police Department as part of Operation COINTELPRO. The assault had been prepared by undercover agent William O'Neal, who had managed to become Hampton's bodyguard. Mark Clark, who led the Peoria, Illinois, section of the BPP, was also killed in the assault, and several other members injured. The survivors, including Hampton's eight-month-pregnant fiancee Deborah Johnson, as well as Brenda Harris, Louis Truelock and Harold Bell, were all charged with 'attempted murder' of officers despite no bullets being fired and the requested bond set at $100,000. Four days after the assault, Geronimo Pratt was the target of a similar raid in Los Angeles.
